Der Granatapfel

Marie Denecke's sculpture was created in 2021 during our wood sculptor symposium as part of the project "With Open Eyes and Arms" as part of the theme year 1700 Years of Jewish Life in Germany and 900 Years of Jewish Life in Thuringia.

The pomegranate plays a central role in the Jewish New Year festival "Rosh Hashanah". The pomegranate is served on "Rosh Hashanah" and one wishes to commit as many good deeds in the next year as there are pomegranate seeds. In addition, the pomegranate is said to have as many kernels as the Torah commandments have – 613. The pomegranate in Hebrew "Rimonim" also adorns the ends of the Torah.
